FREED FROM SIN
But now, having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive (have) your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life. For the wages of sin is
death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:22-23
How, exactly, were we freed
from sin? If we are to derive the benefit of eternal life, then we should know how we were freed. Some might want to say that we "earned" it by being good. Others might say that we are "basically
good." But, those of us who have come to Father through Jesus Christ know that the real way is through our faith in the atoning work of Jesus our Lord upon the cross. We have not "earned" our
freedom, but we have been given the greatest gift by our faith in Him.
Because of the sin nature that
we received from our ancestors through Adam, we did not even seek God. But, when we heard the message of life in Him, we, by faith, received Him as the Lord of our life. Because of His work in His
life and upon the cross, we can have the reward of eternal life. We have not earned it. It is a free gift from God our Father because of what Jesus did on the cross for all of
us.
Now, it is His heart that we
share this good news with those about us who do not know Him. As we do, we can give to others the opportunity to have the same free gift that we have received!
