GOD'S REFINING
FIRE
...For He is like a refiner's fire and like fuller's soap. And He will sit as a smelter and
purifier of silver, and He will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver..
Malachi 3:2b-3a
Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your
testing, as though some strange things were happening to you...
I Peter 4:12
In both the old and new covenants, there is the reference to the purification process for the
children of God. We do not like to think of this process, and forego it when we can. Going through a test where we may suffer physically, mentally, or spiritually is not something that anyone wants
to experience.
In the reference in Malachi it speaks of a purification process where "slag" (non gold or silver
metal) is removed. It is accomplished by a heating process. This image reveals that there are things (attitudes, actions, thought processes, etc) which need to be altered or removed from us.
Purification removes old, unwanted, needless things and replaces with new things.
In the process which is mentioned in Peter, it is a process whereby a metal is strengthened as
it goes through the heating process. As we persevere by depending upon Holy Spirit in the testing process, we become stronger and grow in the Spirit. Through both means, Father intends to make us
over in Jesus' image!!!
