THE OLD MAN
and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the
circumcision of Christ. ... and when you were dead in your tansgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him having forgiven us
all our transgressions....
Colossians
2:11,13
As all
know, circumcision is a removal of flesh from a man that is not needed. In the times of Abraham, when it was instituted by God, it was to show "in the flesh" the relationship of God to man. The "old
man", the flesh, was symbolically removed. This was also to be the "mark in the flesh" of the covenant relationship with God.
In the
new covenant that believers have with Father God through Jesus, the flesh needs to be removed. The circumcision of which Paul speaks is the symbolic removal of the old flesh, the old man. When Jesus
was crucified, He died on the cross and entered the realm of the Spirit. When He died and then became alive again, his old flesh was crucified, and He arose a "new man."
When we
receive Christ and are then water baptized, it symbolically removes the old fleshly man. Though it is symbolic, it is a very powerful action. We are now able, by the Spirit, to overcome sin as never
before. We can walk in the victory that He had over death! By the Spirit, we do not have to sin!!
