REPENT FOR THE
KINGDOM
Now in those days John the Baptist came preaching..."Repent, for the kingdom of
heaven is at hand."
Matthew 3:1a-2
From that time Jesus began to preach and say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at
hand."
Matthew 4:17
It was prophesied of John that he, in the spirit of Elijah, would come proclaiming and
preparing the way for the Messiah, Jesus. He preached, "Repentance!" John's message was strong in that he spoke of the sins of the people. They needed to repent in order to
receive!
Jesus also came proclaiming the kingdom with a message of repentance. But Jesus taught much more
on the repentance in order to receive the love of the Father and the kingdom.
John's message has usually been seen as fiery and confronting while the message of Jesus has been
seen as one of love. Both of these could be the correct analysis.
John was confronting the people that they needed a major change in their heart! They needed to
repent (ask forgiveness and turn). If not, there would be no kingdom for them!!
Jesus' message was less stringent. He brought the love of the Father into His teaching much more.
He spoke of the kingdom as the reward for repentance.
Jesus' message wants us to change so that we may be children of God by His love!!
Will we do that?!
Apostle James
