PUT ON THE NEW SELF
Set your
mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. By.... But I now you also, put them all aside; anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth... And so, as those who
have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
Col. 3:2, 8, 12
In these verses in Colossians, Paul is
telling all who read that we must have a complete change of heart when we receive Christ as Lord. We are to change from our "natural man" to our "spiritual man." The actions of the old man emaninate
from the nature inherited from Adam who fell from grace. These actions (attitudes) stem from an evil heart not of God!
But, the actions of the "new man" are from
the Spirit of God which we receive from Father! The actions and attitudes of the Spirit are those which edify us but also glorify Jesus as Lord! These actions will also show through us the mind of
Christ. These action and attitudes will draw people to Him because they show the world a different way of living which leads to joy, peace, education of the doer and the
receiver.
Paul went on to say in this passage that
these attitudes lead to a "bond of unity" which is the love of Christ among us. Brethren, love one another as Christ loved us.
